Touch Assignment

Stitches
Crochet
10"x 4.5"

"Touch is the oldest sense, and the most urgent. If a saber-toothed tiger is touching a paw to your shoulder, you need to know right away. Any first-time touch, or change in touch (from gentle to stinging, say), sends the brain into a flurry of activity"
-Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of The Senses

Statement:
The quote above emphasis how touch is important in identification. I wanted to play with both the sense
of sight and the sense of touch by creating something that visually identifies as something of nature, flowers,
But when one touches the flowers it identifies as something else, something plushy and soft. Changing the
way in which the brain now identifies the object.

Fingerprint Figure
India Ink on Mixed Media Paper
8.5" x 6"

"Our skin is what stands between us and the world. If you think about it, no other part of us makes contact with something not us but the skin. It imprisons us, but it also gives us an individual shape."
-Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of The Senses

Statement:
The quote above describes how the skin is truly the one thing in contact with the world. I wanted to showcase
this idea by creating a work out of my own personal fingerprint. My fingerprint entrapping a figure, giving
it a shape, making my personal fingerprint what is in contact with the world.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Converse: I love shoes in general, but these have to be my go-to shoe, they match everything and I love the way the platform spices them up a bit.

Camera: This camera was a gift from my aunt when I was young and I love using it to capture special moments and then later scrapbooking with said photos.

Headphones: I constantly have music on, I hate the quiet, and these particular headphones I love because I got them from one of my close friends.

Bracelets: Me and my friends from home all got these matching bracelets from my mom so every time I wear them I am reminded of them and of my family.

Yarn: One of my favorite pastimes is crochet. It has been a very calming hobby and has allowed me to meet some great people.

Art 21 Response

For my response, I watched a video on artist Jamian Juliano-Villani.

Two words to describe her work would be humorous & social commentary.

Repetition & Perspective: this painting includes the repetition of pink and white tiles that appear to be traveling back in space, which help create the one point perspective in this piece.

Boar's Head, a Gateway, my Pinecone, 2016

Line: This painting includes the use of line to draw the eyes around the piece. For example the middle diagonal line, or even the curved line in the back room, they make my eyes follow them and then swing back around to other sections of the piece.
